Why site die or become inactive that I have seen over the years:

  1. Each webmaster must buy a site name and renew it on a cycle of 1 to 10 years. If the site suddenly goes to another page saying the webmaster must renew, that means the webmaster allowed the name to die either by accident or purpose.
  2. The IP address is where the files are located. The site name (1) is attached to the address. Webmasters must pay for bandwidth used. Bandwidth is bytes served up when you call the site name. If you call a 1,000 byte file once only bandwidth is 1,000 bytes. If 1,000 people call the 1,000 byte file bandwidth is 1,000,000 bytes. The servers sale blocks of bandwidth to webmasters. Sometimes you will see that the website is blocked for 24 hours or until the end of the month because the limit is hit on bandwidth. I get around 5,000 hits a day. I serve about ½ a magabyte per call. My bandwidth on a normal day is 2.5 gigabytes. If I serve pictures you can multiply that by 100.
  3. The webmaster sometimes just closes up the site. Time and money is normally the answer I get from the webmasters.
  4. 404 The site is gone without notice. Sometimes this happens because of web traffic. Check the address and try again in an hour or so.

Sites take a lot of time to update and maintain. For me it is a labor of love. I love the sites I attach. Yes, I use the page myself! Sadly webmasters rarely tell me when they close up shop. When the sites get (1) or (2) blocked I can not contact them because the email address is name@webname.com and when the webname is blocked the email is also blocked. Once sites do 1-4 I also can not help get you product ordered. That is why I suggest using credit cards. You can stop payment.

You can help me by emailing me at dennislr@pacifier.com if you find a site is doing 1-4 so I can alert all the users and try to make webmaster contact.
